The Artist Within
Clients of The Caring Place are afforded the opportunity to participate in The Artist Within Program.
Borne out of research and philosophy that determines "Alzheimer's doesn't take away memory," as explained by John Zeisel, director of Hearthstone Alzheimer Care, but rather affects that part of the brain that "gives you access to memory..", The Artist Within Program is intended to unlock and give expression to some of those memories.
Art helps bring thoughts and feelings alive again for those with a diagnosis of dementia. Scientists are not exactly sure why but are discovering that most memories are stored as images that are not destroyed by Alzheimer's Disease. Thus, many individuals (who have never painted before) are able to produce beautiful works of art.
The clients at The Caring Place adult day center meet weekly with artist, Ellen Reynolds, who directs The Artist Within program, and who sensitively guides individuals as they create their 'conversations'. Ellen knows that art is a tool that invites communication, assists with expression, provides cognitive, memory and physical stimulation, and brings forth memories. Art also helps to reconnect people to the active world that surrounds them.
Time and time again, at The Caring Place we experience individuals diagnosed with advanced Alzheimer's Disease who paint stunning works of art. These paintings are matted and framed, and then presented to the families of the artists. The families are stunned that the paintings are so colorful, clear and expressive. These paintings show that their loved one who has a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease is still able to 'speak'. These paintings become priceless memories.
